Moving to or staying long-term in the Philippines is an adventure, but it can be a logistical headache if you don’t know the “hacks.” After years of navigating the islands from my base in Germany, these are the 3 “Day One” essentials every Expat, Nomad, or Balikbayan needs to know.
1. The Connectivity Hack
Don’t rely on your European roaming. As soon as you land at NAIA, get a local eSIM (Globe or Smart).
- The Insider Tip: Download the GCash app immediately. In the Philippines, GCash is king. You’ll use it to pay for everything from street food to electricity bills.
2. The Slow-Pace Mentality
In Europe, we depend on schedule. In the Philippines, the schedule is “Island Time.”
- The Hack: If you have a meeting or a government appointment, always schedule it for the first slot in the morning. If you go after lunch, “Philippine Time” usually takes over.
3. Food: Go Local, Stay Safe
The best food isn’t in the malls; it’s in the Karinderyas (local eateries).
- The Hack: Look for the place with the longest line of locals. If the food turnover is high, it’s fresh and safe.
- The Must-Try: Don’t leave without trying Sinigang the sour tamarind broth is the ultimate cure for the tropical heat.
- The Green Strategy: Since local spots are meat-heavy, finding healthy, plant-based meals requires a two-pronged approach:
- Specialized Hubs: Use apps like HappyCow to find dedicated vegan cafes in urban areas like Makati or Siargao.
- Market & DIY: Visit the Palengke (wet market) for affordable fresh produce like mangoes, kale, and okra. If you have a kitchen, cooking your own “Vegan Sinigang” with radish and water spinach is the healthiest way to experience the local flavor without the grease.
